MIGRAIN October assessment learner response:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Some good ideas and good attempt to apply theory.

EBI: You need to get going quicker-you lost marks on Q1 by not writing more: Propp? And specific examples from the text.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Question 1:

Propp's idea on the 'seven spheres of action'. In the poster of III manors the character can be seen to be a villain and create complications, however his character type can be seen as a hero as he is displayed as the main protagonist that restores equilibrium.

Question 2:

  • Similarities: urban setting; single (male) character dressed for urban environment; similar composition and colour scheme; possible connotations of determination, overcoming difficult backgrounds, poverty, stereotypical masculinity, danger or threat, binary opposition (‘The Showdown’).

  • Differences: Ill Manors allows us to ‘get to know’ the character while Nike is deliberately ambiguous; both use the sky background to create meaning but in very different ways (looming clouds v rising sun).

Question 3:

  • Neale “repetition and difference” – allows producers to evolve genre but maintain audience;
  • Abercrombie “Genres permit the creation and maintenance of a loyal audience.”

    Question 4:

Preferred or dominant readings: Celebrating hip-hop and urban culture; central image strongly endorsed – stylish, iconic etc.; strong connection with audience – name checks use first names/trust audience knowledge.
Oppositional or counter-hegemonic readings: reinforcement of negative black stereotypes.
Negotiated readings: an understanding and appreciation that many audiences will adopt somewhere between the two extremes.

    3) Read the exemplar response from one of the Y12's (one of the best, which is a strong B grade). Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

    Question1:

'A gun in his hand may suggest he is trying to restore / create a new equilibrium'

    Question 2:

"Estates usually have connotations of the working class, who are typically black"

    Question 3:

"Applying Abercrombie's theory it is clear to see that genre can build up a sense of loyalty within the audiences."

    Question 4:

"Another counter hegemonic reading may be that this particular issue of the magazine appears to be oriented around more rappers, rather than including artists of both genders."

    4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.

    • Propp's theory, 'Seven spheres of action' - character types e.g: villains , heroes etc.
    • Schatz 'genre cycle'
    • Neale "genres are instances of repetition and difference"
    • Terminology: Enigma, new equilibrium, gratification etc.

    5) Identify your strongest question. Why did you do better on this question?

My strongest question was question 3 as i had included the theorists, Abercrombie and Tolson and applied their quotes referring to how genre is important to media producers and audiences.

    6) Identify your weakest question. Why did you score lower on this particular task?

My weakest question was question 1 as even though i had stated Todorov's equilibrium and Barthes action codes , i didn't develop as much on it, for example, the new equilibrium for todorov and the enigma codes for Barthes theory. Also i didn't include Propp's character types.

7)Re-write your weakest answer in full. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure your typed re-draft is a top-level answer.

    Question 1:

The film poster advertising III M manor conveys a man holding a gun looking to the side, ready to pull the trigger. According to narrative theory, action codes are applied within this poster as they convey violence and conflict. The fact that the background is dark with only a few street lights gives the audience a sense of enigma, also the body language of the man looking away leaves the demographic with unanswered questions, such as what could the man be looking at?.

Furthermore according to Todorov, within narrative theory, there is an equilibrium which shows that their is a beginning to the characters life where there could've been no action occurring. Which then it leads into a disequilibrium which is where action begins to occur and everything goes wrong causing a huge dilemma, thus this is where Propp's study on the seven spheres of action takes place. As the main protagonist prevents the villain from creating conflict and restores the equilibrium. This thus welcomes the new equilibrium which occurs near the end and everything restores to its natural setting.
