Introduction to feminism: 1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project? She was sexually harassed/insulted 3 times in a week and realised other people go through these experiences as well and therefore made a website to raise awareness for people that do get sexually harassed/insulted. 2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? Laura Bates stated many statistics that show that there is inequality between men and women. The Everyday Sexism Project is a place where women can talk about there problems. This being said, this shows that post is required. 3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? Feminism Blog Task: 1)The article focuses on a period drama aired in America called "Pan Am" and the music video for the Beyonce song "Why Don't You Love Me." 2)This idea mentioned is that the females in both texts are for men to look at, linking to the idea that sex sells. An example of which in the first media text is through a magazine cover, which display the main character, "Laura," as a stewardess in tight but suggestive clothing. Also, it highlights the fact the the pilots and stewards would stay in expensive and luxurious hotel, which to an extent may not as true to this day, potentially giving the counter hegemonic reading that the representation of pilot and in flight can crew are inaccurate. The Beyonce music video refers to the 1950s' typical housewife, who is cleaning and making sure that the house is ready and perfect for the huband, who would be at work, whilst the wife would be at home, looking after the children etc. Of course,

It's important to have your own opinion on this debate and, crucially, be able to support it with reference to feminist theory and current examples.  Feminist theory: key notes Judith Butler: gender roles Butler believes traditional feminists are wrong to divide society into ‘men’ and ‘women’ and says gender is not biologically fixed. By dividing men and women, feminists accidently reinforced the idea of differences between the two genders Butler believes gender roles are ‘a performance’ and that male and female behaviour is socially constructed rather than the result of biology. These channels are regulated by Ofcom and have to deliver a certain amount of specific content in order to fulfil the terms of their license. MIGRAIN : Representation theory (Media Catch-Up 15/01/18) When analysing representation in the media we need to be able to apply media theories as well as discussing dominant and alternative portrayals. A reminder of the notes on Representation theories: Richard Dyer: Stereotyping and power Richard Dyer's theory suggests that the complexity and variety of a group is reduced to a few key characteristics. An exaggerated version of these characteristics is then applied to everyone in the group.  He states that those with power stereotype those with less power.  Therefore, we have stereotypes of non-white people, poor people and women... but not so many of white, middle class men. McDonald's: 1) McDonald's  is a brand that promotes fast food and works to provide consumers with the products they require. Referring to Dyer's lines of appeal , i think that McDonald would fit under the category of happy families ; the fact that everyone wants to belong. This is due to the fact that McDonald's brings families together and creates an atmosphere of happiness for most of the community.Furthermore, McDonald's would also fit with the category of childhood as it creates happy meals associated with small toys to create gratification for the younger consumers.
