2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?

An icon is a physical resemblance to the signified, the thing being represented where as an index shows evidence of what is being represented. An icon is very significant within media texts as it provides a physical representation of what is being promoted and a visual representation of what the actual product is distributing.This is the main focus within the advertisement as it indicates and gives a clear understanding of what is being advertised. Furthermore, indexes are also important in media texts as they help advertise and help attract people. 

3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?

Symbols are a resemblance between the signifier and the signified.The connection between them must be culturally learned. for example, numbers and letters.Global brands may try and avoid symbols in their advertising
